The Bottom Line

Whatever the supposed initiator or cascade of events  (estrogen dominance, stress, celiac or leaky gut syndrome, T-3 thyroid or relaxin deficiencies, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, insulin resistance, an unknown pathogen), fibromyalgia and chronic myofascial pain involve electrolyte disturbances within the mitochondria of the cells, and in cells themselves, especially in muscle cells and surrounding nerves. Mitochondria are the energy machines of the cells. When the membranes of mitochondria don’t perform properly, calcium is displaced; other electrolytes (phosphates, oxalates) flood in, and oxygenation along with energy production fails. Mitochondrial health and performance is governed by progesterone in both males and females. Progesterone is also necessary for nerve health, and it is important to the myelin sheath of nerves. Inadequate progesterone may lead to nerve dysfunction. Progesterone also governs the receptivity of the body to insulin, relaxin, and thyroid hormones. Progesterone also promotes calcium uptake into the bones. Therefore, I am seeing fibromyalgia and CMP gradually disappear when sufferers use natural progesterone applied to the skin and make lifestyle changes that aid the absorption and healthy metabolism of calcium. With progesterone supplementation, results can take awhile – from 2 months to one year. You will gradually improve and feel better each day. It’s not a sudden cure, but progress is obvious and exciting.

For both men and women:

1)  Use natural progesterone cream . Wild Yam is NOT progesterone and will not give the benefits of real progesterone. Be sure the cream you buy is in a closed, air-tight container and not a jar with a screw-top lid. The container should dispense a dose of 15 – 20 mg, when the dispenser is pushed. Men use 1/8 th tsp daily, which equals a 10 mg. dose. ( See Dr. Lee’s book on hormone balance for men.) Women normally use 20 mg, (one dose each day), 2 – 3 weeks per month, according to the directions on the container. The progesterone will, over time, correct estrogen dominance, and insulin and thyroid resistance (according to Dr. John Lee). ( Note : Progesterone supplementation makes people more sensitive to insulin and thyroid medications, so patients taking those hormone medications should decrease them gradually under a doctor’s supervision . Progesterone supplementation also increases sensitivity to synthetic hormones in birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. These need to be decreased gradually, also under a doctor’s supervision.)

2)  Better yet, get all your hormones tested and bring them all up to optimal levels for a person in his or her 20’s. Always go for bio-identical hormone replacement. Never use synthetic HRT or birth control pills.

3)  Get chemicals out of the house and off your skin. Go natural with skin care and cosmetics.

4)  Aid calcium absorption by completely avoiding aspartame, because the aspartic acid therein keeps calcium in the cells. Also avoid trans-fats and MSG .

5) Change the diet to enhance calcium absorption by discovering celiac sprue, leaky gut syndrome or food allergies and avoiding foods that insult the gut and interfere with calcium absorption.

6) Change the diet to a more alkaline pH to create a better environment for calcium absorption.

7)  Supplement the minerals and vitamins that seem to be chronically deficient in fibromyalgia patients – malic acid, B complex, more magnesium than calcium, and manganese. In addition, go for super-nutrition by using complete, high-dosage supplements , including trace elements. Try a 24 hour urine stress test to determine whether you have an iodine deficiency. Or simply take an iodine supplement…Iodorol, or Icelandic kelp.

8)  Get the T-4 + T-3 thyroid test . If T-3 thyroid is low, have a doctor prescribe Armour thyroid or a synthetic dose of T-3 in addition to T-4. Retest to check levels from time to time. 9)  Exercise gently as tolerated.

10)  Get careful massage to work out lumps (CMP) and move electrolytes.

THE CHECKLIST SHORTENED

1)  Use natural progesterone cream.

2) Better yet, replace all deficient hormones with bio-identical hormone replacement.

3) Get chemicals out of the house and off your skin; go natural with skin care and cosmetics.

4) Never eat or drink aspartame (Nutrasweet). Avoid trans-fats, MSG.

5) Diagnose and treat digestive problems and food allergies.

6) Make your diet more alkaline by reducing grain consumption, and increasing consumption of vegetables and fruits.

7) Supplement with vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, especially B-complex, malic acid, magnesium, and manganese. See if you need iodine.

9)  Exercise gently as tolerated.

10)  Get careful massage or acupuncture for symptomatic relief.

NOTE: If you are experiencing fibromyalgia-like symptoms, along with kidney stones and progressive osteoporosis, you need to see a good endocrinologist and have your parathyroid glands checked. These are four tiny glands resting upon, but separate from the thyroid gland. They can develop growths that are hardly ever cancerous. The purpose of the parathyroids is to regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. When growths are present, calcium is dumped into the blood for no good reason. The only cure is surgical removal of the growths. High blood calcium will eventually seriously compromise health, so action is important.
